A STATE COAL DEPOT.
MR HOGG IN THE HOUSE. (To the Editor). Sir, —I have a question on the Order Paper asking whether the Government ;"nlend to start a State-cohl depot at Maeterton. There has been a rumour referred to in the newspapers that they intend to do so, and I am in hopes that the Government are plucking up a little bit of courage at last. Now this must come to those who are not in the know, as a bit of real refreshing news. About four years ago a largly signed petition was forwarded to the Government requesting the establishment of ' a State coal depot in Masterton. | What was the position taken up by [Mr Hogg re this position? For the purpose cf letting those who aie not in the know, Mr Hogg's first act waa to induce the Borough Council to run the State coal depot, thus relieving the Government of a I pledged responsibility not only toMasterton bat the the whole Dominion. But when Mr Hogg discovered that | the Borough Councillors took in j hand to seriously consider the advisability of having a Slate coal depot established, Mr Hogg, for reasons best known to himself, wrote a latter to the Mayor ard Councillors in which he stated that after various triah nad been made State coal bad been proved to be neither good for household purposes or gas making. Mr Hogg's sincerity i* this mutter is ,i 'somewhat like his sincerity in closer ■ settlement, and his surface advocacy \ of the working man, but all of which • I may have a little more to say bye and bye.—-I am, etc, J. M.
