MASTERTON CHESS CLUB.

The Masteiton Chess Club met on Monday night to] discuss matters referred from the New Zealand Cheas Association, connected vs.th mxt year's Congress, the president, Mr W. R. Hummer, in the chair. Several important changes were suggested, one bsioy; the substitution of gold and silver medals instead of the substantial money prizes at present given. The members iast night considered unanimously that the alteration would not be in the best interests of chess, it being considered that ths Association can afford to donate substantial prizes. A proposal that the championship be played in sections was viewed with favour this being a simple way to curtail the time taken. The playing cf fifteen or sixteen strenuous chess matches consumes a great amount of time which the new suggestion would practically cut down by half. The UJub's delegates will be instructed on the various remits, which are to be considered at a special meeting in Wellington Bhortly. It. was decided that discussion of the SDUth Wellington Chess Club's proposed visit be held over for a later meeting. A telegraphic match is not looked upon with favour by the City Club, and they suggest a match over the boards, they to visit Masterton on some suitable date. The Secretary reported that Mr J. Brown, of the Wairarapa Age, had offered the.Club a trophy to be played for as the Committee thought best, the donor preferring that the second and third class players be catered for mainly. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Brown, and tha Committee was instructed to decide conditions for the tourney. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr W. E. James, of Wellington, for having acted as adjudicator for the unfinished games In the past matches with CartertoD. During the evening ladder games were[resumed, Mr G. Jones getting on to the top rung. The unfinished matches are to be completed next week.
