AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES TEAM'S TOUR. JWATCE WITB WELLINGTON. By Telegraph—-.Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 17. The American Universities' Rugby fifteen met a strong Wellington representative team in the first match of their New Zealand tour, being buaten by 22 to nil. The visitors do not as yet play a good Rugby game, but are evidently keen to learn, and are most certainly good sportsmen. Their work shows much crudeness, but they play a strenuous game, and put any amount of vigour into it. Tries were scored for Wellington by Avery, Irvine, Roberts, Pyle, Ferry and Kinvisr, two of which were converted by Ryan. The visitors never looked like scoring, snd Wellington could have put up many more points had they tried very hard. MANAWATU v. WANGANUI. By Telegraph—Press Association. WANGANUI, July 7. The representative Rugby match, Wanganui v. Manawatu, took piace here on Saturday. The weather was fair, and the grourd good, and there was a large attendance. Manawatu were the heavier team, especially in the forwards, but the Wanganui backs' kicking was good, although the tackling was so.ntw mt weak. The game ended in'Wanganui's favour by 10 points to 5.
MAORI TEAM v. OTAGO. By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, July 17. The O'ngo v. Maoris football match, played here to-day, was witnessed by 5,000 spectators. To visitors inflicted a rather decisiv. viefeat on the Otago representatives, winning by 17 points to 8. The gams was very fast and open. RYAN CUF. RED STAR v. CARTERTON. Played at Carterton, and won by arterton by 15 [joints to 8. Stars were the first to attack, and before anyone had realised that the game had started, Douglas by a very tricky rui beat the opposing hacks and scored the first try tor Star?. The kick went wide. -Stars 3, Carterton nil. Carterton made determined efforts tj equalise matters, but the Stars held the upper hand, and kept the home team busy defending their line. Play was centred, and the Carterton men getting in the Stars' 25'?, N. McKenzie potted a good goal from the field.—Carterton 4, Red Star-3. It was Carterton's turn to attack now, and C. Groube bsatiDg four or five Star men, scored near the posts. N. McKenzie hal no trouble in adding the extra points.—Carterton 9, Red Star 3. The Stars now livened up, and for several minutes kept the home team on the defensive, and several times their men nearly crossed the Carterton line. For the remainder of the spell the game was very fast, each team defending and attacking in turn, in the seciond spell Carterton had slightly the better of the game, but the Stars > held them well in hand. N. McKenzie and Roydhouse crossed the Star line in the second spell, but neither of the tries were converted, while towards the close of the game B. Welch scored for Stars, the try being converted by P. Ball. By winning this match Carterton have won the Senior Championship, and are (he holders of the Ryan Cup for a year. GLADSTONE v. GREYTOWN. Played at Grey town, and won by Grevtown by 4 points to nil. This was a very good exhibition and although the visitors were playing two men short, they had the best of the game. The Greytown score was a potted goal by P. Rogers, Mr J Crosbie was referee. THOMPSON—PAYNE CUP. DALEFIELD v. GREYTOWN. Played at Dalefield, and won by Dalefield by 18 to 3. Welch (2). Rozska and August scored tries, and Smith and Ashton kicked penalty goals for Dalefield. MASTERTON v. CARTERTOR Played at Carterton, and won by Masterton by 15 points to 3. Bannifi. ter (2), and A, Thompson scored for Masterton, Bannister converting the three tries. This was a very good game, but towards the close Masterton had things all their own way. »
LIBERALS v. LOWER VALLEY. Played at Featherston, and won by Liberals by 25 to nil. This was a very one-sided game. The Feathersfon score was made up of five converted tries.
RED STAR v. WERAITI. Won by Weraiti by default. COOPER CUP. RED STAK v. DALEFIELD. Played at Masterton, and won by Red Star by 18 points to ni'. C. Smith 12), Dixon, Riddel, Ewingtm and Wickens scored tries for Stars. WAIRARAPA RUGBY UNION. The fortnightly meeting of the Wairarapa Rugby Union was held at Carterton on Saturday evening, Mr B. Chapman presiding. A Masterton junior player was suspended for twelve months, and the Carterton Club's protest agairst Weraiti was dismissed. The following dates for representative matches this season were decide On:—Against Bush, August 6ib, St Masterton; against Southland, September Ist, at Masterton; against Otago, September Bth, at Carterton; against; Canterbury, September 15th, at Carterton; against Manawatu, (date to ba arranged) at Masterton. It was deciled t3 go on tour this year, and to play the following matches:—Rangilikei, at Marton, August 10th; Wanganui, at Wanganui, August 13th,; Taranaki, at New Plymouth, August 18th; and Manawatu at Palmeiston, August 20th. It was decided that the secretary write to the Wellington Union, notifying them that Wairarapa would not be able to play their B team on August 20th. Masterton juniors were drawn to play Lower Valley, at Carterfon, next Saturday. . Tb.3 Njrth v. South match is to be played at Masterton on Saturday, July 30th, the teams to be picked next Saturday.
