SPORTING.

. RACING.

TURF NOTES. (By Zetland). The Wellington Winter meeting opens at Trentham to-morrow. Nearly all the horses that will contest the first day's have arrived at the scene «*f action, but consequent on the heavy rains that has fallen the track work has not been of a high order. The racing track is certain to be very sloppy, and bacKers generally may find mi ri than the usual difficulty in selecting winners. Te Arai, winner of tbe Gishorne Steeplechase last week, «r'ci who was greatly fancied for the Wellington Steeplechase to be run on Wednesday, is now reported to be a non-starter, his party having decided to wait for the Grand National at Riccarton. Loch Fyne, Kremlin and Continuance will also be absentees, but a fine lot of horses will be in evidence during the meeting. Up to aiew days ago it was thought tbat Paisano was tq be reserved for the Grand National Hurdles, for which race he was a strong favourite. By winning a hurdle race at Giabrne he has been penalised slbs, bringitg bis weight up to list 61b. As he has only to carry lOst, 101b in the Winter Hurdles to-morrow; he has come into the market very unmis-. takably and has been backed in the doubles with all the best steeplechase horses. Compass, last year's National winner, will be a starter, and such horses as Tauira, Hjdrant, Mahuta and Waitapu should be able to test Paisano over the t*wo mibs. Over half of the eighteen acceptors in the Parliamentary Handicap are looked upon as sure starters. Sir Fiisco is very handy in heavy going, while California, North East, Merrie Zealand.Bollin and at least three of the bottom weights are capable of galloping freeiy in mud. - Many spcrtsmen have been looking forward to this meetin?, to gain a better idea of the chanc: "of leading • candidates for the Gran 1 National meeting. The first day's form may not be a good line to go upon, on account of the heaviness of the tracks, but next week, under better conditions, the form may be more reliable.

At Trer.tb.anV yesterday morning, the Hon. J. D. Ormond's team,, consisting of Aadax, Bollin, Elfish, Oxton, Contender, Dreadless, Morecombe, did slow work. Audax pulled up lame, and is said to be more sore than usual. .North East and Mgapuka ran six furlongs in lmin 20sec, and Rose Noble beat Scotch Plaid over five furlongs in lmin 7sec, Inez and Magneto ran half a mile in 54aec, and Electrokoff beat Truganini in a six furlong go in lmin 21sec. Compass, looking very fit, was better than St. Felix and Waitapu over a mile in lmin 55aec, and Mahuta beat Incbbonny very easily over seven furlongs. Other that executed good wurk were Stayboy, White Cockade,; Paritutu, Tauira, Waiora, Maidi,, Tawbaki, Stourton, Mo och, Ukraine* and Arclight. Capitol fell at the home turn fence and his rider; M. Deeb(e, bad a bad l'all, his left arm being broken.
