AMUSEMENTS.
"REVENGE" AT THE TOWN HALL. TO-NIGHT'S PERFORMANCE. This evening Messrs Allan Hamilton and Max Maxwell"s Dramatic Company, which is to produce a series of popular melodramas, will open a two'nights season in the Masterton Town"Hall. The opening production will be "Revenge," a stirring military drama that was among the most popular of Mr.. Bland Holt's rerirertoire, irom whicrTthe company has seleced a large.number of plays. The play ltrelf is popular, and the company has always presented it very attractively. Miss Beatrice Holloway, who has already availed herself of opportunities of earning the goodwill of Masterton audienes, and Miss Nellie Strong will fill leading roles, and much of the humour of the piece is entrusted to the capable hands of Mr Charles Brown. The box plans are at Miss Rive's. To-morraw evening the company will produce "Woman and Wine," a play in which Miss Holloway has already achieved remarkable success. Mr Maxwell will himself take the part of the hero, Dick Seymour.
CONCERT AND SHAKESPEAREAN EVENING.
In the Methodist Schoolroom, this evening, a first-class entertainment in the form of a concert and Shakespearean eve%ing will be given by the members of the Methodist Junior YouDg Men's Class, in aid of their ciass funds. The first part of the programme . will take the form of a concert, including solo and instrumental items. Mr L. Minifie, Masterton's young magician, will also give an exhibition of ledgermain. The second parf of the programme, will be of a specially interesting character, .being the production of Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice." The piece is divided into four scenes, viz., 1, Bassanio seeks help from his wealthy friend Antonio; 2, Antonio's wealth, beine scattered abroad, he borrows from bhylock, a Jew ;-3,'Shylock hears of his daugh ter's flight and Antonio's losses; 4, the law court, The following is the cast of characters—Portia, Miss Tocker; Nerissa, Miss Logan; the Duke of Venice, Mr i. F. Temple; Antonio, Mr J. McMaster; Bassanio, Mr L. McMaster; Salariro, Mr 0. S. Jarrett; Gratiano, Mr R. J. Miller; Salanio, Mr T. McMaster; Shylock, Mr E. R. Wilson; Tubal, Mr A. H. Hoar; Clerk, Mr A. E. Dobson. The performers have for some time past been assiduously practisine the play, and a really good production i« anticipated. Altogether, the evening's entertainment should be well worth the small charge that is ceing made for admission.
IHOMP3ON-PAYNE PICTURES.
The usual change of pictures will be presented at the Foresters' Hall to-night, when a first-class series is promised. Tne star pictures will include "His Last Burglary," a good dramatic subject by the American Biograph Company. "The fllan flcmt" is eaid to be of an exciting nature, and is resplendant with exceptionally fine scenery. A new series of "Mount Etna in Eruption" will also be shown. "Picturesque Switzerland" will lead the scenic series ai,d should afford some excellent views of that country. The comic element will be very strong, and a good laugh may be assured at "Foolshead tries Somersaults," "Calmo Playing Billiards," and "A Pair of Schemers." The matinee prizes for the children have been awarded, over ten years, to Miss Rona Mafon, Oxford street, Lansriowne. Under ten years, Master Frederick Whitelpw, Kuripuni.
