THE CARE OF CATTLE.
A good deal of controversy has f arisen this season throughout the 1 Wairarapa, and indeed in many other parts of the Dominion, as to the | beneficial or other effect of covering cows in expused paddocks during the < coldest parts of the winter. Many farmers have contended that the practice is not a good one, because of the alleged liability of the animals to chill and cold when a change takes place and the coves are removed The. matter has now apparently been set at rest, as the result of exhaustive experiments in the South. "Rusticus," writing in the Lyttelton Times, on the subject, says—"l have used covers for years, and have no difficulty in the direction indicated. On all days, except in rainy or very cold weather, the covers are removed, and although there is not a great deal of shelter in the , cow paddock, the cows keep healthy and, welt. 1n.,. fact they thrive all the better with ! covers at night time and in rainy ■ weather, and look well all the win - i ter. It is not a good plan to leave s the rugs on all the winter night and . day, as is sometimes done. Skin . troubles are likely to arise, and the . animals do not "feel the good" of j the rug when an extra cold time x comes. It is thought by some that . grooming must he done if the cows j j»re covered. That is by no means . the cane. -The cows will keep quite . clean and healthy if the rugs are re- , moved each fine morning and reB placed each evening.
