Own Correspondent. Thursday. The local Gun Club fired a series of sweepstakes this afternoon, when there was a good muster of competitors. In the first sweep J. S. Laurenson and T. H. Hughes divided first honours. J. Warrington being next. The second match was won by A. Teal, T. Jti. Hughes second, E. Warrington third. The third sweep fell to E. Warrington, with A. Teal second.
A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, when a resolution of sympathy was passed, to be forwarded to the widow and family of the late Mayor, Mr A. Armstrong. Councillor J. A. Dudson was elected to the vacant Mayoral chair. Messrs W. Gallon and J. H. Augr list have made donations to the Dalefield Football Club. The second match in the Friendly Societies' card tournament was played last evening, when the Foresters defeated the Oddfellows, by 27 games to 25. At a meeting of Luyal Heart of Oak Lodee, 1.0.0.F.,M.U„ last evening, Bio. G. Bowles was< installed N.G. for the ensuing term, and Bro. C. J. De Lacey V.G. A little son of Mr T. Moorcock, of Carrington Settlement, had the misfortune to fall off a chair the other day, and in addition to breaking his arm, dislocated his collarbone. Captain E. McKenzie presided at j the annual meeting of the local Fire 'Brigade last evening, when thereport arid balance bheet wp'c read and adopted. The matter ui iin«ngirgr a leaf for an 'autograph album w<. u« presented by the Fire Brigades of the Dominion to Mr J. G. Gilberd, who has resigned the secretaryship uf the U.F.B.A. after, twenty-five years', service, was left in the hands of the secretary. The election of officers resulted:—Captain, E. McKenzie; first lieutenant, F. Jacksqn; second lieutenant, N. McKenzie; foreman, H. McKenze; South End foreman, G. Masson; secretary and treasurer, C. M. Whyte: custodian, E. McKenzie; auditor, H. Hart; members ! of the executive, J. Wallace, W. H. Baillie. and K. Smith. There was a goodly gathering of Liberals here to-day„ moat outside portions of the electorate being represented. The question was debated as to what should be done about a candidate. The opinion had been freely expressed that Mr J. T. M. Hornsby would not again contest the seat, and it was reported that he had asked that he should' be permit ted to stand aside. Numbers present said they had been asked to state that there was but one wish in the electorate, and that was that Mr Hornsby should come out. This ex pression of opinion was unanimously confirmed by the meeting, and it was decided to communicate the de cision to the ex-member. The position was duly placed before Mr Hornsby, and, after a great deal of consideration, he consented to the announcement being made that he should be the candidate. A Liberal League was formed, and the meeting adjourned tu a future date, when further business will be transacted.
