SPORTING.
RACING. TURF NOTES. , (By Zetland). R. Knox, has returned from his trip to Rotorua, and is supervising the training of his team, the members of which now in work are—Merrie Rose, Hir Laddo colt, Merrie Emerald, a chestnut hunter, Merrie England gelding, and Rose Herald. Merrie Emerald is <o race at Trentham next week. Mr A. Reside's Franzisca is in work again, and doing satisfactory work at Opaki. bne is losing her lathy appearance now, and may be useful during the coming season. At Opaki yesterday morning, the horses worked on the grass track were Merrie Rose, Rose Herald, Merrie Emerald, Sir Laddo colt, Merrie England gelding, Tumut, The Workman colt, Aberration, Sandix, Sir Solo. Franzisca, Lady Volley, Gaelic. Uthers out, but not worked, were Pukewai, Aimwell, and Fiist Consul. The handicaps lor the Grand National meeting give sportsmen food for thought and consideration. Many will doubtless await the Wellington meeting next week in order to learn something of present form, and of course horseg tnni show to advantage at Trentham will have plenty of support for their Riccarton engagements. There was dount in the minds of many aa to which horse would head the list in the Winter Cup, but the handicapper assesses PenaUs list 91b, as five pounds better than California and Boanerges. Los Angelos list 31b, and North East list 21b, are also clos ■■ up to the top mark. Merrie Zealand lOst Gib is well looked after, and the same may apply to Wauchope and Wiramera, 10at 51b, and Tiptoe lOst lib. Horses that can be counted as fairly well treated are Faunus 9st 131b, Wet Day 9st 91h, Gold Battery 9st lib, and Penza 9st. The Australian horse I'ribery naturally heads the list in the Grand National Steeplechase with 12st 131b, .Kiatere acd Audax coming next with list 131b. The latter is probably rightly assessed, but Kaitere, who is not in his prime, could have been let off with a few pounds less. Loch Fyne list 71b; has plenty of weight, but Le Beau reads well with lOst 61b. Sir Lethe lOst 4lb has two pounds more to carry than in the Wellington Steeplechase which is over-a shorter distance. Taken all thioiigh the handicap is a well thought out one, and there should be numerous acceptances. As generally supposed, Wimmera list 131b is in pride of place for the National Hurdles. Although he has by his recent wins earned a solid impost, he may find difficulty in giving some or the light weights as much as forty-one pounds. Oxton lOst 91b. Hydrant lOst 21b, Mahuta lOstllb, Outlander 9st 121b, Stayboy 9st 101b, Continuance 9st 61b, Waitapu 9st 31b. and Arclight 9st are all nicely placed. After the Wellington meeting, in which a large number, of candidates are engaged, more light will he thrown on their chances at Riccarton, but in the meantime there will be many backers who will' be supporting horses that appear to have been well treated in j the handicaps.
