TRAIN SERVICE OF MASTERTON.

Every day the fact is becoming more apparent that the daily service of trains to and from Masterton is the worst, in the interests of the district, that could possibly be conceived. If the railway department had set itself deliberately to the task of crippling ibe town through its train service, it could not have* conceived a worse system than that which at present is thrown at the re* sidents somewhat after the manner of the bone to the dog. Business people who have dealings in Wellington, and on the Palmersion-Napier and Palmerston-New Plymouth sections have to put up with delay and inconvenience in travelling that would not be tolerated, anywhere else. It is needless to go into detail, for the department has already had all that placed before it. Suffice it to say that there are not half enough trains, those grudgingly provided are run at the wrong hours to suit travellers, and, generally,. the system is of the little Pedlington order all through. If a number of people in Masterton could get up such steam i as to turn practically ail the hotels l of their town into "tombs of ail-1 ence," surely there is enough "go" I left in them to raise such a sweep-1 ing agitation as would compel the! Government to deal out justice to Masterton in regard to its train service, which after all is the most vital part of th,e town's existence. Experts in business have already stated that if Masterton possessed the railway I service which, by reason of its importance as the chief inland town of the Wairarapa it is fairly entitled to, its annual turnover woubld be almost doubled. And able and experienced commercial men do not make these statements without knowing what they are talking about!
