THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 1910. A VALUABLE ASSET.
The proposal of the Government to utilise the water that is now running to waste for power purposes is one that should receive the hearty support of Parliament. It will mean a great deal to inland towns, such as Masterton, for with cheap power available, industries of various kinds will spring into existence, and population will increase rapidly. In stancing what cheap power-can do in New Jersey, U.S.A., the town of Houston has become a flourishing manufacturing centre through using the means nature placed at her hands?. Littb Falls, whence the water powei flows down the face of a cliff soma hundreds of feet in height, is a beautiful sight with its eternal crown of mi='t. It is* not for its beauty the practical people of the district hold it in regard,, but for the power it supplies by means of which factories fcr all kinds of industries have been developed. What has since been done by hampssing the mighty falls of Niagara is a matter of history. We have no Niagara [in this dominion, [but there aie [laces in New Zealand of equa I
capacity whh the New Jersey la Up, | mountain torrents which only need j controlling (o make their power of value. In the Wairarapa nature has been lavish in her gifts in this re- \ spect, and it is lef c to the ingenuity j and enterprise of man to make proper use cf what is at hand. Such an undertaking is of too great a magni- i tude for private enterprise in a i young country such as New Zealand. This is recognised by the Premier, hence his proposition that the Government take th2 initiative in the work. Fortunately this is not a party question. The work, if carried out, would benefit the whole country* With cheap motive power at hand, it would mot be long before industries of many kinds sprang up, and population rapidly increased. The attitude of the Government and of Parliament during ihd present session in helping lorward this great movement will be watched with keen interest.
