A BLOODLESS "FOUR" H."

It is satisfactory to'note that the merfcran public conscience has been )

aroused at last to the necessity for stemming the flood of death and i mutilation that regularly is3ues from celebration of the "Glorious Fourth," the anniversary of which has juat takes place. So far as.. it has been possible to contrive in a community which, despite its vaunted progressivenesa, is conservatively attached to ancient customs and observances, the festivities were purged of much that has rendered the aftermath of the occasion in years gone -by a time of mourning in thousands of American .homes. The extent of the grisly harvest that whitens for reaping each Independence Day may be guaged by the fact that during the past seven years the festivial has shown a grand total of more than 340,000 killed and maimed. Most of these were children. New York City has come into the forefront of a reform" movement, whose motto is "A Bloodless Fourth,'" and for this the humanitarian sagacity of the Mayor is chiefly responsible. Not only is the existing law prohibiting the discharge of firearms, fireworks and crackers, now for the first.time to be rigidly enforced, but even the retail selling of, fireworks is to be included in the prohibition.
