TOPICAL READING.
M. Fallieres' love of the simple life was the cause of a curious incident not long ago. The King of Sweien had been invited to the Elysee, and a concert had been arranged in his honour. A famous operatic star had been engaged to sing, and Massenet, the eminent composer, had arranged to- accompany her, when suddenly it was remembered that there was no piano in; the whole place I In a great hurry & piano was borrowed during dinner,, but it proved to be such an inferior instrument that Massenet declined to play upon it. Eventually, another accompanist waff found, and all went off well ; baft had the King of Sweden known that there was not a pieno at the Palace of a President who lives i& the gayest citj in the world, he would probably have been as much amused as M. Massenet was incensed.
