FOOTBALL NOTES.

(Half-back.) The record attendance at a football match in the U-nt d Kingdom is 121,452, at the Eu B and versus Scotland contest of 1903, at Hampden Park, Glasgow. Wellington wi-h to play Taranaki at New PymouU about tne middle of August, but the matter haa net yet been dealt wit.i by the Taranaki Union. The English Rugby team that toured Argentina last month included a New Zealandsr, A. C. Palmer, the London Hospital and English international thr^e-quarter. 13 England decadent as a sporting nation? Take lawn tennis, cricket and football, says a writer in the Saturday Review, and you will find that the Davis Cup reposeth at the Antipodes, the ashes of English cricket lie in Australia, and the wraith of Euglish Rugby moans in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. "I have sufficient confidence in my feilow countrymen to feel that they are all right—if they will think more. He would indeed be a bold man who would say that we ' are going forward. I must confess that I look in vain for any sign of improvement in English sport, particularly on the mental sicle of it. It is really quite an important question, although I have no doubt that few will recognise the fact. In Germany football has made gigantic strides within recent year?, and seems likely to oust all other games from the favour of the comparatively small number who go in for sport. With a view to suppressing betting among players and officials, the Taranaki Rugby Union haa decided to inform all clubs that if it comees to the knowledge of the union that any player or official haa a wager on any match the offender will be dealt with as provided by the bylaws. The itinerary of the American Universities' Rugby team's tour of New Zealand is almost complete. It will be noticed that leading fixtures have been given the visitors, and that they will be pitted against the best provincial teams of the Dominion. The programm", which ia almost complete, is as follows: July 16th: V. Wellington representatives, at Wellington. July 20th: V. Otago representatives, at Dunedin, July 23rd: V. Canterbury representatives, at Christchurch. July ' 30th: V. Auckland representatives, at Auckland. A match will probably be played at Palmerston North against the Manawatu representa* tives on July 27th. Allan Cameron, the ex-Melrose forward, assisted Greytown to win the Wairarapa Rugby Union's senior championship last season, and by his present form, he will help Oriental, Wellington, to a similar honor this season.

Congratulations to the New Zealand Rugby Union on the way in which tiey taught the Wellington Union their duty in regard to the suspension of the Melrose player adjudged guilty of striking an opponent. Two years is a much more adequate sentence for the offence than four weeks.

The occasion of the Red Star juniors forfeiting at Carterton last Sauturday is, I understand, the first occasion on which a team from that club has forfeited a match. Mr P. O'Leary. a former Wairarapa representative, is picked to play five-eighth for Rangitikei against Manawatu this season.
