THE BIG FIGHT.
The amount of interest that is being taken all over the world in the John-son-Jeffries contest is simply enormous. From the point of view of interest, the approaching fight is the biggest affair of the kind that there has ever been. Modem invention and science are largely responsible for the interest taken. Now.-adays we know what is going on in other parts of the world almost as accurately as if we were witnessing the' events recorded. An afT ir, such as this Johnson-Jeffries business, tak-
ing place, say, sixty years ago, would have keenly interested some hundreds, certainly not more than a few thousands~at most, and to-day there are really millions of people ii£a very considerable state of excitement as to the jreault of the issue. White men naturally hope that the white man will win, and the | black men hope that their "coloured brother" will prove the victor. A great deal more of the pure unadulterated animal is required in prizefighting than in any other sport, and as the negro is a nearer relative to the parent ape than the white man, he has an advantage in that respect. Moreover* Johnson is said to be the more rapid fighter of the two, and when his activity, wonderful constitution, strength, and tremendous hitting powers are taken into con- | sideratinn it is obvious that he is a ; most formidable opponent. Jeffries, however, is so great a man in the prize-fighting world that there are millions who believe that he will defeat, Johnson. A satisfactory featore of the affair is that the Governor of Nevada is going to do his best to see that everything is carried out in a fair and square man- ! ner„ and it is to be hoped for the credit of both the white and black ; races that no disgraceful scenes will j occur in connection with what will i certainly prove an historical affair. |
