Mr R. Buick has sustained a losa by the death of his well-known mare Rifkmaid, by Needlegun—Rus3;ey | Belle The little mare, who had been doing reaily good work at Opaki, met with an accident a few days ago, in which she had her knees cut about. Blood poisoning and 'complications afterwards set in, and despite the attentions of a veterinary surgeon she failed to recovir from the irjtirie?. Riflemaid was bred by Mr James Macara, of Maatertor, and after being purchased by Mr Buick won a number of races, including lha Aahhurst, Manawatu, and Wairarapa Cups. Some time ago she received a nasty fall while running in the Wairarapa Cup at Tauherenikau, and as she appeared to be detrimentally affected was given a lengthy spell. About six months ago she was again taken up, and being nominated for this year's New Zealand Cup, gave every promise of being one of the contestants of the day, especially as m her recent w«rk she gave promise of returning to her best form. Sportsmen will sympathise with the owner in the loss of one of the gamest stayers yet bred in the Waiiarapa.
