THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. MONDAY, JUNE 20, 1910. A GOOD SUGGESTION.
It is'somewhat unfortunate that the Masterton Chamber of Commerce did not see their way to endorse heartily the proposal submitted to them for that purpose by the Pahiatua Chamber of Commerce in regard to the early morning train from Cross' Creek. Masterton business men would, cf course, like to see an earlier train fnm Wellington in the morning than the present first train up, but the Minister for Railways has erophatioal'y declined to accede to any suggestion in that direction—hence it would seem that it may be possible to secure some improvements in the existing service in other directions. The- proposal of the Pahiatua Chamber is that the train leaving. Cross' Creek at 5.25 a.To; be "pushed forward" either by travelling a little faster or making shorter stops at Mastertbh, Eketahuna and Woodville, and so be made to arrive at Palmerston North in such time aa to aotttect with the train leaving Palmecaton, Noutbl
;or New Plymouth at 11.42 a.m. Phis appsars to be an .eminently -easonable suggestion, and a request ;hat the Minister for Railways :ould scarcely refuse, unless it is impossible to take "the crawl" out Df the late in the morning train from Cross' Greek! No one appears to know exactly why trains in New Zealand run at such a slow rate of Bpeed. but it 13 a conditioa of affairs which one sincerely Hopes is not going to last for ever. With the increasing growth of the Dominion it may be surmised that even the Government's trains will increase j their speed a little. We trust that the ] Railway Conference at Palmerston North, which will take place this week, will recommend the suggestion of the Pahi3tua Chamber for favourable consideration at the hands of the Mn:j3ter.
