At the Masterton County Council meeting yesterday, leave of absence was granted to Cr J. Morris from Council meetings during [his trip to Australia. The Public Trust Office forwarded to the meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday, statements of accounts to March 31st last in connection with the Opaki Lansdowne Water Supply loans sinking fund showing credit balances of £25 5s and £45 9s, respectively. Notice is given that George G. Cork and William H. Long, of Masterton, trading as Cork and Longbutchers, have been adjudged bank, rupts, and a meeting of creditors is convened for Monday, 20th inst., at the Courthouse, at"10.30 a.m The Commissioner of Crown Lands notified the Masterton pounty Co»ncil yesterday !!that its proposal for the expenditure of over accrued thirds to theramount of £212 0s Id had been approved by the Wellington Land Board. ? The Valuer Genera! has informed the Masterton County Council that the approximate rateable capital value of the Alfredton Riding is £533,866, and the unimproved value £291,691. The Masterton County Council yesterday struck the following rates for 1910-11:—Wainuioru Riding, §d; Tipper Taueru Riding, fd; Opaki Riding, fd; Rangitumau Riding, fd; Te Whiti Riding, £d; Alfredton Riding f d general and l-16d separate rate. Wairarana and the Bush districts will be well represented in the butter and cheese clashes at the' National Dairy Show. The following Dairy Companies are among those entered in the Butter Classes: —Mauriceville, Makino. Ballance, Ballance Monarch, Ballance (Ballance), Ballance (Pahiatua), Ballance (Konini), In the Cheese Classes the following are among the rntrants:—Dalefield, Makino. Rexdale (Mangamaire), Taratahi, Rongokojkako, Ballance, Featherston, Mangamaire, Greytown, and Belvedere. Recently Mr H. G. Williams, of Masterton, wrote to the Premier in reference to the use of petroleum on roads, and has now received a communication from Sir Joseph Ward, thanking him for the suggestions contained in his letter, and informing him that as this was a roads matter, and should either be dealt with by the Public Works Department or by the local bodv, he should confer with the engineer of the Masterton County Council on the subject, with a view to his bringing it under the notice of the Public Works Department. The Premier stated that crude petroleum was not at present being obtained in sufficient quantities in the Taranaki district, to enable the wholesale carrying out of Mr Williams' suggestion. Cr Kebbell presided over the monthlyfmeeting of the Finance Committee of the Masterton County Council yesterday morning, there being also present Crs D. W. Foreman, J. Miller, J. Colquhoul), A. Murray and R , F. R. Beetham. The treasurer reported asjfollows:—Bank, general fund account, cr., £36 10s 9d; local bodies loans account, £933; accounts, cr. balance £520 Is 6d. Receipts since May 10th amounted to £245 5s sd. Accounts amounting to £1,708 6s 3d were recommended for payment. Cr Murray moved, and the chairman seconded, "that as there appears to be some dispute regarding the nature of ! the contract undertaken by Dalgety and !Co. to complete contract No. 183, {let originally to S. W. Green, payment of the balance due thereon, together with the deposit, be held over pending the opinion of the County solicitor* being obtained on the point mentioned." The motion was carried.
The next meet of the Wairarapa Hunt will be held at Gladstone on , Thursday. ■ Mr T. Skippage, Featberston's noted pigeon shot. left yesterday for Hastings to attend the £IOO bird shoot that is to be held there to-day.. Knowing his reputation as a crack shot throughout this district, it is hoped he will worthily uphold his end among the Bawke's Bay shootiats.
Th 3 London judges of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society's cheese v classes, Messrs Mills and Sparrow, report as follows on Dalefield, the winners: —This was a very fine cheese, hut had been kept a little too cold, so that it had not a good chance to thoroughly develop. The symbolical female figure which is to crown the memorial shaft over the tomb of the late Prime Minister, Mr R. J. Seddon, arrived from England by the Arawa on Monday. The monument is in bronze, and is about eight feet in height, weighs two tons, and stands on an octagonal pedestal. It is the work of Mr Henry Poole, a young English sculptor. By the Arawa, which arrived orr Monday, there came in charge of Mv- Lindsay, one of the matrons of the British Women's Emigration Association, and emigration sfrsnfc for the New Zsahnd Government, twenty eight domestic servants who have. situations ready for them in New Zealand. Seventeen leave immediately for Hawke's Bay. Mr H. Cr Murray pointed out the omission from the I agreement uf certain sections which 3 he was of opinion should contribute . to the upkeep of the Waihoki and [ Alfredton-Weber roads in the Mas- - terton County, and he moved, "That [ as the draft agreement does not ap- > pear to include sections 4 and 5 (Higgrason),- 22 and 22 (Robbie Brothers), and section 9 and part 3 section 10 (M. S.
