A cable was received from the Argentine asking that the price be put on the-Melbourne Cup winner, Prince Foote. The owner, who ia not de sirous of selling, replied "One hundred thousand pounds." By "Zetland." i Owners responded liberally in rr- ■ spect to the New Zealand Cup nominations, and the number of horses entered, eighty-six, is probably the largest recorded for the principal event of the year. All the leading owners of the Dominion ire represented in the list, and although quite a number of the entrants have not yet proved to be stayers, there will be quite sufficient to provide a good | field, even after the usual defections I caused by the exigencies of training in undergoing the necessary severe preparations. Students of form I will find difficulty in estimating the chances of the rising three year olds, for those that have shown brilliancy as two year olds may find diffii culty in staying out two miles, I Among those nominated that so far I have shown their capability to gallop j long distances are Frisco, Riflemaid, Aberbrothock, Master Soult, Husbandman, Lady Lucy. Oiyoi, Diabolo, California. Milan, Advocate, Ingoda, Tikitere, Roosevelt, Osiris. Outlander, ..Taskmaster, and Merrivoma. During the ne::t four months others may show pretensions to staying form, and wiil naturally come into the betting market as they sfpw winning form. Meetings held in the meantime, in which New Zealand Cup entrants are raced, will be fol- ) iowed by more than the usual interest, and by the time for the contest of the season to be decided this will ba at its height. The Wairarapa horses nominated for Ihe race are Osiris, Riflsmaid, Sir Solo, and Merrie Zealand, and it would not be surprising if the quartette went to the post on the eventful day.
