CASTLEPOINT COUNTY.

The monthly meeting of the Castlepoint County Council was held in the County office, Tenui on Saturday last. Members present were:— The chairman (J. S. Langdon), and Crs R. L. Langdon, Richardson, Leimie, "Ryder and Innes. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr H. Bennett, re disposing of a aite for roadman's cottage which the Council agreed to complete. From Messrs Gawith and Logan, re taking Mrs Cox's section under the piovisions of the Public Works Act. From tha Chief Post Office, re post and telephone offices being closed at different hours in the afternoon. From the Under-Secretary, Public Works Office, re forwarding proposals of requirements for current year. From the Treasury, vith account of loan for vvhakataki Valley Road, and interest to date £ls 14s 8d on £1,600 advanced. From Mr W, Andrew, re expendin? rate on road to Otahoma. From District Hospital and Charitable Aid Board : levying the amount (£152 14s 4d) to be contributed for the current year. From the Chief Surveyor, returning plan of road in Makirikiri Valley for amendment and a duplicate of tracings. ' From Wairarapa Charitable Air Board, with refund of charitable aid disbursed. From the Public Works Department re legalising and deviating roads. Councillors Lennie and Ryder were authorised to sign a memorial to the Governor re taking land under the Public Works Act, and the chairman was authorised to execute the necessary declaration to be lodged therewith. Mr Mu-ro attended in regard to the Kates on lea road being removed, Mid f.uinted out the hardship it would entail by cutting-off water from hill paddocks, and other objections. He that the decision of the Council be rescinded, but this was strongly objected to. A notice of motion by Cr Ryder as to what shall constitute main roads in future, was then put and lost on the casting vote of the chairman. The roads were from the Briar Bush in Mangapakeha to Castlepoint, and from Tenui to Manawa, including the whole of the Masterton-Waimata road in the County. The member for Wairarapa, Mr Buchanan, attended the meeting in connection with the expenditure of money placed on the Estimates last session, and also to ascertain the requirements of the County for the current year in the way of grants to assist in the formation and metalling of roaa3 where the rates were in-

adequate. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of General account ±'20.6 i9a 3d, and Loan account £25 6s Bd. Accounts amounting to £l7O 10s Id were passed for payment. The road overseer's report was read and adopted. The Clerk was directed to give the owner of the dumping press at Castlepoint notice to remove it from the shed within a month, and that plans be prepared of the improvements required to the jetty and sheds, and sent to the Marine Department for approval.
