KINGS BIRTHDAY.

TO BE OBSERVED IN NEW ZEALAND. LAW DEMANDS IT. The New Zealand Government like that of New South Wales, has discovered that however much it woild like to fall in with the wishes of King George that Friday be not observed as a holiday, it is unable, legally, to do so. The Kine's birthday is a statutory holijay, and there are certain labour awards which include statutory holidays that must be given by employers. Ic has therefore been decided by the Cabinet that Friday is to be observed as a holiday, and that all Government officea will be closed on that date. No celebrations, however, will take place,, but a feu de joie will be fired by the artillery in Wellington. TELEGRAM TO MAYOR OF MASTEKTON. Last evening the Mayor of Masterton, Mr J. M. Coradine, received the following telegram on the subject from the Prime Minister:—"Regarding the desire of the King that there should be no celebrations of His Majesty's birthday, as complications havd arisen owing to the Kind's Birthday being a statutory holiday, it must therefore be recognised by a large number of people as a holiday, and will now be ohserved on the 3rd of June. It is desirable, however, in view of the King's wish, that no celebrations should take place on that day."
