AEROPLANING.
VERONA TO SOLFERINO. Received May SO, 9 a.m. ROME, May 29. M. Paulhan, the French aeroplanist, flew from Verona (Italy) to Solferino. He alighted on the battlefield, and laid a wreath on the tomb of French soldiers, who fell there. He then flew back to Verona. Solferino ia a village in the province of Mantua, Northern Italy. It ia famous for the battle of 24th June, 1859, in which the allied French and Sardinian armies under Napoleon 111. and defeated the Austrans under Francis Joseph. The loss of the allies was about 18,000; of the Austrians about 20,000. 81-PLANE TRIAL AT SHEPPEY. Received May 30, 9.5 a.m. LONDON, May 29. Lieutenant Dunne made a two and a half miles flight at the Island of Sheppey, Kent, without using the steering levers of his machine. He did this with the purpose of proving that his bi-plane is automatically stable. ' ATTEMPT TO CROSS THE CHANNEL. LONDON, May 29. The Hon. C. S. Rolls, a wellknown English aeropJanist, attempted to fly from Dover to Calais. He ascended at 5.40 a.m. in the presence of thousands of cheering spectators, but owing to the motor mistiring he was compelled to make a hurried descent at Dover, some of the onlookers having a narrow escape. The aeroplane was damaged.
ANOTHER RECORD. Received May 31, 12.30 p.m. NEW YORK, May 3D. Curtis, in a trip, made in perfect outstripped a special train following him. The highest point his aeroplane reached was a thousand feet.; .The journey was a duplication of Fulton's steamboat trip in 1807.
