YOUNG WOMAN ATTACKED. ALLEGED ASSAILANT AKRESTED. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 23. A respectable young married woman from the Bay of Plen'y, who is at present on a visit to her parents, was returning from town betweui 6.30 and 7 last evening l . She passed. the Supreme Court grounds snd when within 100 yardi of her pareuV house Bhe was approached by a man who threw her vi iantly to the ground. A struggle ensued and the woman managed to free herself. In her flight she met a yo'ing girl who stood by her and heipod to attract the attention of two men, who ware passing the end of the road. Tha latter immediately closed with a man indicated to them as the assailant asd held him until a constable was summoned. Other passers as3teted the young woman, who was in a very distressed state, to her parents' home. Sha was very seriously bruised about the body, had an abrasion on the forehead and her clothes were torn. At a late hour last night the young woman was unable to give a collected account of the outrage, 'nt seemel easier. The man arrested gave the name of Alexander McMastars. He is a tall, well-built, well-dressed young man of about 24 years of age. Later. The woman assaulted last night, this morning gave a reporter a'clear account of the occurrence. She stated that she was returning from a church bazaar, when she was accosted by a man, who rushed at ber and knocked her down. He was a powerful man. She is a married woman, of about middle age, and made a vigorous defence, so that the struggle lasted twenty minutes. She subsequently identified the man brought to her as her assailant. McMaster ' appeared at court this morning with assault with criminal intent. He was remanded.
