CHESS BY TELEGRAPH.

AN INTERESTING TOURNEY.

On Saturday evening the chess match between the Masterton Chess Club and South Wairarapa players took place by telegraph. The Mastert)n players were located in their club room at the Y.M.C.A. building, and the South Wairarapa players in the Carterton Borough Council Chambera, both players, being connected with the Morse telegraphic instru ments operating in the play rooms. Promptly at 8 o'clock the wires were set going,, and the first message put through was from the Masterton skip to his opponent as follows —Salutations from Masterton Chess Club. We are now ready to receive your scalps, but will remove them as 'painlessly as the operation will permit." To this the Carterton skip replied ".—"Greetings reciprocated; scalps are not in fashion in Carterton." Play then proceeded rapidly, and by midnight the final result was well in view, although time did not permit of all the games being finished. The local players had first move at boards 1, 8, 5 and 7. and their opponents at boards 2, 4. and 6. The telegraph arrangements were perfect, thanks to the efficiency of the telegraph staff at both ends, especially Mi Loader,.who'operated here, and a lady operator at the Carterton .end of the wire. The following were the teams: Masterton Chess Club being mentioned first in each instance :

Board 1: Connell (captain)* v. Maunsell (captain)*. Board 2. W. Kummer* v. Moore*. Board 3: G. Jones 1 v. Roydhouse senr. 0. Board 4: J. Dagg* v. H. Walden*. Board 5: C. Winchester* v. Bladen*. Board 6: J. Winchester 1 v . J. H. Kidd 0. Board 7: W; Hood 1 v. Koydhouse jun. 0. All the games were well contested, although Carterton did not succeed in scoring a single win, and in at least two of the unfinished games Masterton had a distinct advantage in material, and in the remaining two Carterton had no advantage in force or position. The match, therefore, is a decisive victorfy for the local team. During the evening the room was taxed to its utmost holding capacity, with interested spectators. Messrs Inder and D. B. Thomson acted as scrutineers, and Mr J Logan as referee for Carterton. Mr Downard acted as referee for Masterton at the other end. Mr T. J. Thomson, honorary secretary, upon whose shoulders the preliminary work devolved, left nothing undone, and Mr C. Winchester supplied refreshments. At the.conclusion of play the local captain moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Inder, Mr Keid, of Carterton, and the two operators for the excellent work accomplished by them, and also complimented the Department on its efficiency. The vote was carried by acclamation, and a most enjoyable tourney ended. * Denote games unfinished, which will have to be adjudicated upon.
