THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. SATURDAY, MAY 21, 1910. MASTERTON'S LAST TRIBUTE.

The last tribute of respect paid yesterday by the public of Masterton to the memory of the late King Edward was, as it should be, whole-hearted, impressive, and tending by the solemnity of its character to impress upon the entire community the duty of loyalty. The proceedings, besides showing in no uncertain manner the deep respect and personal regard entertained by all classes of the community for his late Majesty were evidence—for what took place in this town yesterday was typical of similar manifestations of respect and sympathy throughout the country—of the deeply rooted spirit of loyalty to the Throne that exists in the Dominion. The occasion was one of national mourning, and though | what gave riße to the outburst of national grief is a matter of inexpressible regret, yet the proceedings emphasised how tightly the bonds of Empire are being drawn aa the years go by. Injthe death of the late King the people of this Dominion feel that they have lost, quite as much as any other part of the Env pire, a wise, mighty and much beloved monarch. Such a proper appreciation of the blow that h*s befallen the Empire is manifest in all the Dominions and countries over which the late King ruled. Every part of the

enormous British Empire, the greatest Empire ever known in the history of the world, recognises in the King not only the head of the Empire, but sees in the empirical constitution, for which the King stands first and foremost, all that tends to develop and elevate the British races—and the countless millions of other races who i owe loyal allegiance to the Throne — i on those principles that make for permanent and increasing good.
