Mr justice Chapman has gone to Auckland. Mr and Mrs' William Finlay, of Wellington, left for London by the. Ath•enic. *,]'<''■'' Mr Justice Cooper left Wellington yesterday for Palmerston. North, to open the civil and criminal sessions of the Supreme Court there. The chief case is the trial of Pawelka. Tne,new Governor of New Zealand, Lord Islington, is coming out from Home on the P. and 0. liner Macedonia, and will reach Wellington by the Sydney boat, due oh Wednesday, June 22. * ' ",_;. , Dr H. Chesson, who has been resident medical- officer of the Hanmer Springs Sanatorium forthe past year, has accepted the appointment of medical and health officer of the Cook Islands. He will leave for the Islands shortly.

M3n account of the large increase In police buslhebs iti the Palmerston district, the Department has found it necessary to add another officer to -the local. staff to assist Detective •Qcrirke, and Constable Sweeney, of Fielding, has been promoted to the rank of acting-detective. He has arrived in Palmerston to take up bis duties. It is- understood that Sergeant Willis, who fills the position made vacant by Sergeant Maguire'a death, is now on his way fron. Dun•edin, and will arrive in Palmerston in a few days. News has been received in Christ•church that the Rev. John Hoatson 'died at the manse. Leek, Staffordshire, on' March 30th. Mr Hoatson •was a well-known figure in Congregational and athletic circles in Christtcburch nearly twenty years ago. He SLas one of the first pastors of Trinity and his labours there earned the esteem and respect of many 'Consregatlonailsts in New Zealand. Mr Hoatson waa particularly interested in football, and was for several years among the leaders of the Rugby game in Canterbury, acting «a referee in many important mat cbes.»
