MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following is the Engineer's report as read at the meeting of the County Council yesterday: Opaki Riding. Black Creek Road, Contract No. 222, thirds account: Satisfactory progress is being muda with the contract. lam ex f -nding the work, t) the value of the amount available, on the basis of the contract.

As instructed by the Council, I have examined the Black ureek Bridge site with a view to rebuilding. I estimate that a serviceable bridge for heavy Lufflc may be constructed for £l4O. Matahiwi Road, —Contract No. 221, getting, carting and spreading 436 cubic yards of metal for repairs, the delivery of which has been completed. Waingawa to Camp Road.—Contract No. 215, delivering 1280 cubic yards of metal. The above work was only started on the 25th ultimo for the north end, and good progress has been made since. The side drains on the Pairau swamp road are receiving their annual cleaning. Te Whifi Riding. Masterton-Gladstone Road.—Contract No. 219, deliveirng 470 cubic ayrds of metal, was satisfactorily completed last month. Manaia-Gladstone Road: The metal repairs to the above road have been completed with the exception of a small amount of stone breaking. Waingawa to Camp Road: Light surface repairs, by day labour, have been effected on the Manaia length of this road.

Waingawa Ir'rotjctive Works: It would be advisable, before the winter floods, to enlarge the groynes on the Southern bank, which have settled considerably since their construction—approximate cost of work £d to £lO. Rangitumau Riding. Bluff to Rangitumau Road: Contract No. 217, delivering 360 cubic yards of metal for repairs The above has been satisfactorily completed with 95 cubic yards extra. Ruamahanga Protective Works: The construction of the groynes, un dertaKen by Messrs McLachlan and Blatchford, is practically finished. ™

Kaka-amu and Branch Roads.— Contract No. 220, delivering 395 cubic yards of metal for repairs. The contract is now in a forward condition. Wainuioru Riding. Weraiti-Fernyhurst Road: Contract No. 223, building a roadman's cottage. The contractors expect to complete the building during the present week. Contract No. 207, 154 chains of metalling. The contractors made gc: 1 headway last, month, and are within three u work ; ng days of completion.

Contract No. 211, 801.7 chains of metalling. Good work was clone on this contract during the preceding month.

Contract No. 212: The bridge painting,on above road,should be com pleted this week, the weather being favourable.

Masterton-Waimata Road: Contract No. 208, supplying 1,4/5 cubic yards, more or less, of metal, was finished at the end of last month.

Contract No. 216, Diver's Corner to Taueru section, delivering 1,280 cubic yards of metal for repairs. The contractors have worked from the Taueru end, and are now on with +he carting to the Wangaehu Flat. Blairlogie-East Coast Road,—Contract No. 206, supplying 2.540 cubic yards of metal for repairs. The contractors expect to finish this week, with favourable weather. The timber has been delivered for the culverting on the Riversdale and Uriti Roads. The Mutuwaireka roadman's Reserve is being fenced in terms of agreement with Mr Riddiford. Down's Road: Surface repairs and the building and fixing in pasition of seven culverts, were completed last month.

Alfredton Riding. Alfredton-Weber Road: Contract No. 210, metalline SO chains of road, has been done and taken off the contractor's hands, with 20| chains extra. The above work makes the metal length continuous from Alfredton to a mile north of Tiraumea homestead, a total length of fifteen miles. Contract No. 225. supplying 550 cubic yards of metal for repairs, between Boustead's Bridge and Happy Valley, was finished last month, and the contractor i 3 now completing surface repairs to the Cautle Hill Road.

Waihoki Road: Contract No. 183, 45 chains of metalling with* burnt papa. The contractor had five chains to cart on my visit of inspection on the 3rd inst., and they have since been reported finished by the spreader. I have also .arranged for the delivery of 11 cubic yards of metal for repairing the section damaged at the Blue Slip on the Alfredton-Weber Road. I inspected, when in Mfredton last month, the length of the Hinemoa Pah Valley Road, recently handed over by the Government. Half the length is over steep side long ground with heavy battens; on this section I would anticipate some heavy slips in the event cf a heavy winter. I have instructed the roadman to cut toes of obstructing slips away and to cut the water off the steep grades as far as possible. The approximate cost of constructing a 72 feet span bridge over the Te Hoe River—£soo. { Upper Taueru Riding. The Ore Ore-Bideford Road: The metal repairs, authorised by the Council at last have been carried out, and the drays are now engaged making repairs to the Wangaehu Road. Timber has been delivered for renewing the Bridge Creek structure.
