TURF NOTES.
(By "Zetland.")
Penates will probably be taken over to Australia next spring to com* pete at the Australian Jockey Club's meeting. Mr Higbden's pony Gloss, which has so far raced unsuccessfully, will most likely be seen out at the Otaki meeting. Later on she may be taken to Melbourne to compete in the £I,OOO pony race at Ascot. As a yearling Armlet was purchased for 150 guineas. The Menschikoff mare has won nearly £6,000 in stakes, and as she is still perfectly
sound may increase her winning
amount next season.
The Hon. J. v. Ormond has parchased in England the thoroughbred stallion, Hymettus, by Balsam. He has performed well in the Old Country, and should be a welcome addition to the first-class horses of the Dominion.
Audax is ruling favourite for the Auckland Steeplechase. For the Hurdles Wimmera, Paisaco and Tauira are at the shortest prices. Woolloomooloo, whose name appears in the nominations for some of the leading jumping events is an AustraJian-bred horse, and was recently purchased over there by Mr A. F. Douglss, of Hawke's Bay.
Prospector is now being trained by C. O'Neill, at Awapuni, and is reported to be in nice condition to be prepared for winter racing. Bobr:koff was only given a slight respite from work on his arrival from Australia, and is again doing steady exercise at Napier Park. Last week several of Sir William Russell's horses were submitted for sale by auction, when low prices were realised. Resulka brought 5gn.% Intrepida lOgns, gelding by Coeur de Lion 36gn8, and Berengaria 40gns. The trotting gelding, Timothy, who was owned in Masterton for seme time, is still scoring win 3. At the Forbury Park meeting last week he accounted for the St. Clair and Otago Handicaps. , The death of Ejng Edward, soi the consequent loss \>i or.e of the* regular holidays, NoV?mber_9th t rill have an effect upon the racing dufca that have hitherto held meetings on I that dßy. The Taratahi-Carterttn Club is one that will be detrimect- ; ally affected financially* by the lots of the holiday, and may therefore consider the advisability of applying for new dates.
Nominations for the New Zealand Cup close on June 7tb. The stake money is again £2,000. An alteration has been made relative to penalties, whereby £l5O can be won before an increase in the Cup weight will be incurred.
