FLOOD TURNED TO ICE.
The somewhat unusual phenomenon of a river overflowing its banks, flooding a vinage, and freezing hard before the water could recede, has occurred in the Hokkadaido, reported the Japan "Chronicle" on March 13th.On the night of the 11th March, it appears, a river at Toshibetsuraura,
Eso district, Kitami province, in the island, rose to a considerable height, and flooded the village. In fifteen minutes the water rose to a height of about 4ft above the door. The flood occurred during the night, and much
discomfort and excitement ensued among the villagers, some of whom had to pass the night,, shivering with the bitter cold, on the beams. Next morning they found that the water in I their houses had frozen hard and the furniture was embedded in it, presenting a most curious appearance. In the circumstances there was no other course but to seek a temworary home elsewhere. It was not expected that the unfortunate villagers would be able to return to their ice-bound dwellings until this month. v
