Eso district, Kitami province, in the island, rose to a considerable height, and flooded the village. In fifteen minutes the water rose to a height of about 4ft above the door. The flood occurred during the night, and much

discomfort and excitement ensued among the villagers, some of whom had to pass the night,, shivering with the bitter cold, on the beams. Next morning they found that the water in I their houses had frozen hard and the furniture was embedded in it, presenting a most curious appearance.
