Friday.

An alarm oh the firebell last night called the brigade to an outbreak in Mr W. J. Bernll's timber mill. Fortunately it was suppressed without much damage being done. The Masterton Homing Pigeon Society have promised the Soutn Wairarapa Poultry Association a special prize, which is to be allotted to the best working homer in the forthcoming Show.

A good deal of sympathy is felt here for Mr and Mrs W. J. Lindop on account of the death of their granddaughter, Noeline, which occurred in the Wellington Hospital yesterday. The deceased was a bright girl of eleven years, and a favourite with all who knew her. For several weeks she had been suffering with an internal complaint, and entered the nospital to utidergo treatment. The funeral took place privately at the Clareville Cemetery, this morning, only the immediate relatives being present. Messrs C. Lee, M. Robinson, H. Deller and W. Tucker were the pall-bearers. The Rev. H. T. Stealey officiated at tha grave. The local Gun Club fired a twentyodg bird sweep yesterday afternoon, the first prize being a trophy presented by Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P. Four tied for first place, Mr H. Hodge winning the shoot-off. Mr R. I Reid was second.

Mr W. Moore has accepted the

position of scoutmaster of the local troop of Boy Scouts. The lads are indeed fortunate in securing the services of such a'capable man. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society was held yesterday, Mr H. R. Bunny presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. Tt was decided to take no action in respect to the suggestion of the Gisborne branch of the Farmers' Union that the Government be urged to appoint a meat grader similar to a dairy produce grader. Tne incoming committee were recommended to j consider the question of altering the butter fat contest from ten days to six. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr W. Howard Booth; Vice-Presidents, Messrs Ji. Eagle, jnr., and H. Morrison; Treasurer, Mr G. W. Deller; Assistant Treasurer, Mr T. V. Moore; Auditor. Mr J. Mor.crieff; ! Committee, Messrs W. Howard Booth, W. C. Buchanan, H. R. Bunny, F. Court, A, Daysh, W. Fisher, W. A. Hart, J. Hodder, R. G Kemble, J M. Lightfoot, T. V Moore. J. G. Oates, S. Poison, C. | Keid, T. Reid, S. u. Skelley, H. H Wolters, H. McPhee and W. H. Beetham.
