Lord Knollys, replying to a correspondent, said it is quite correct that King Edward is at all times anxious that his name should be left oat of all political controversies. In the House of Lords Lord Crewe explained that the alterations in the Budget stated no bargain of any kind respecting that or any fu- | ture Budget. Lord Lansdowne declared that the Peers were bound by pledge to acquiesce in the passage of the Bill, and justified last year's reference lo the constituency, because the Government themselves proclaimed it a novel and unprecedented occasion. He severely commented upon the Government's tactics in securing the Irish vote.

Lord Lorebuin warmly attacked Lord Lansdowne, and it'll ged tiiat the latter's predominant motive for resisting the Budget 0f,1909 was an attempt to secure the triumph of a pernicious doctrine of tariff reform.

Lord SeeJy, in a discursive debate, justified the policy in Somalilanci. where the Mullah's power via 3 waning. Both Houses decided to adjourn, after a formal meeting lr-day for the Royal Commission, until May 26th.

Mr W. Hunter, K.C., who was recently appointed Solicitor-General for Scotland, in succession to Mr A. Dewar, appointed to a Scottish Judgeship,has been re-elected unopposed tor Govan.

Mr Mitchell Thomson, a Unionist, was returned unopposed for North Devon, in place of Mr T. L. Corbett, Conservative, who died on 7th April. (Mr Hunter had to seek re-election because of his inclusion in the Miaistry.)
