CARTERTON NEWS.

(Own Correspondent.) Friday. Mr Weston is'at present relieving porter at the local railway station, Mr Bridge being away on annual holiday leave. The funeral of the late Mr Lucas Feal took place this afternoon, the remains being laid to rest in the Clareville Cemetery in the presence of a number of mourners. A service was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, as well as at the graveside, by the Rev. Father Duffy. The annual parishioners' meeting of St. Mark's Church is to be held on Monday week. The Rev. R. Young, of St. Mark's Church, will conduct a service at ParkvaJe on Sunday evening, at seven o'clock.

Mr J. S. Pepper, of Greymouth, and a former resident here arrived fay last evening's train on a visit. ' His son, Mr G. Pepper, of Eltham, vis also on a isit to the town. A good deal of interest was taken in the shooting match, between the active and honorary members of the local Territorials at the Belvedere range yesterday afternoon. The Territorials, as was to be expected, secured a win by 86 points, the scores being 373 and 287. A number of local residents were early risers this moring to see Halley's comet and clear view. The Rev. W. J. Elliott, formerly m charge of the South Wairarapa Methodist Circuit, conducted his . nitial services at his new district, Whangarei, on Sunday last, when there were good congregations. He was to be welcomed at a social last evening. Mrs Elliott, whose health had been very trying during her resi- | dence here,stayed at Te Aroha.as she i found the continuous journey to Whangarei too much. The annual meeting of the subscribers to the Carterton Library will be held on Tuesday evening.
