AUCKLAND ELECTRIC TRAMS.
IN FAVOUR OP THE AIR Bit A ICE. At the Royal Commission appointed to inquire into and rep'snt upon the efficiency and suitability of the braking equipment in use on the Auckland trams. James Hampden Brennand, rolling stock superintendent lor the Auckland Tram Uompany, who has had experience cn tne North Sydney tram service, and at Leeds (also holding the position of electrical inspector at Sydney), gave his opinion in favour of the air brake, in preference to the magnetic brakes. He had known the magnetic to fail on several occasions. He estimated the cost oi installing the magnetic brakes throughout the Auckland service at approximately £50,000, and as all the undergear would have to be reconstructed, the time occupied in making the, change would be considerable. William A. Button, electrical engineer, gave it as his opinion that the air brake, with the hand brake, was an improvement on the magnetic brake, and would be the most suitable for the Auckland conditions. The commission adjourned till to-morrow.
