The latest returns from the Masterton dredge stjov, 29ozs sdwts for 133 hours' working, and the Mystery Plat dredge for 139 hours' working shows a return of *l6ozs 3dwts. Ths annual social and dance of the Master ton Fire Police and Salvage corps will be held in the Drill Hall on May 26th. A strong committee has been appointed to carry out the arrangements, especially in preparing the floor and decorations. The supper arrangements are in the hands of » ladies' committee, and an enjoyable time may be looked forward to.

A distressing accident is reported from the Lome Farm Benevolent Institution at Invercargill. Ailison Lorrimer, a girl of seventeen, was beating beeswax and turpentine, when the mixture caught fire and set her dress alight. The girl rushed into the open, .where a strong wind fanned the flames, which inflicted terrible injuries. She was taken to the hospital, and lies in a critical condition. In the opinion of Mr E.- Tregear, Under-Secretary for Labour, the,outlook on the labour market is parcicalarly good. Towards the beginning of the winter there is occasionally some indication of what the conditions will be, and Mr Tregear believes that the coming winter will be a comparatively prosperous one. "The result of the rise in wool and frozen meat has not yet been felt," said Mr Tregear, "but with the coming spring I look forward to a time of almost phenomenal prosperity for all concerned."

The shareholders of the Workers Mutual Benefit Building Society were called together last night, whsn £3OO free of interest was balloted for. Mr R. Kranagen was in the chair, and there was a large gathering of shareholders present. Mrs A. G. Hoar was the lucky shareholder, and was declared the winner of the £3OO free of interest. The chairman stated that a sale would be held early in May, as the money was coming in very freely, which shows that the Society is very popular.

There is something Gilbertian about the election of the conimitteeof the Eltham Technical School. Four members were to be elected, but there were only three householders present, and they were members of last year's committee. It was a case of re-electing themselves and adding an absent fourth. After supper the floor was cleared for dancing, the music being supplied by the Misses Iggulden, Richards, Jones and Mr Clayson. Mr C. Smith was M.C. Almost enjoyable evening was brought to aclose at midnight, by hearty cheers from the gentlemen present for the Huia Hockey Club. A telegram was received from the Rev. H. Watsof. at Palmeraton North, expressing at his inability to be present.
