BIG LINER ON THE ROCKS. PASSEGNERS LAND SAFELY. Received April 19, 10.4 a.m. LONDON, Apnll 8. j The Atlantic transport liner Minnehaha, from New York for London, ran on the rocks at the.Sciily Islands on the Cornish coast, and was badly damaged. The passengers were landed safely. STRUCK AT MIDNIGHT. PASSENGERS' WILD RUSH ON DECK. CAPTAIN PERSUADES THEM TO GO BELOW AND DRESS. Received April 20, 12.8 a.m. LONDON, April 19. The Minnehaha struck at midnight in a dense fog, The paasengeis rushed on deck in their night attire, but the captain quietly an i coolly persuaded many of them to return to their cabins and dress. After ascertaining the depth ,of the water in the forehold, boats were lowered and the passengers taken ashore. The captain and crew remained by'the ship.
Motor cars, pianos and machinery were jettisoned, but the steamer would not float.
(The Minnehaha is a steel twin screw steamer of 13,443 tons gross, built in iyoo by Harland and Wolff,. Ltd., Belfast. Her dimensions are: Leigtb, 600 ft 7in; breadth, 65ft sin; depth, 39ft sin.) STEAMER WAKATIPU REFLOATED. Received April 19. 12.30 p.m. LAUNCESrON. April 19. The Union Steam Ship Company's steamer Wakatipu, which went aground near the entrance to the river Tamar, through failure to answer hsr helm, has been refloated.
COUNTESS OF RANFURLY WRECK. DIFFICULTY OVER INQUIRY. Received April 19, 10 a.m. SYDNEY, April 19. Those interested in the schooner Countess of Ranfurly, recently wrecked between Sydney and Noumea, wished to have the enquiry regarding the wreck held here, but it transpires that a preliminary enquiry wa3 held by the British consul at Noumea. That functionary, finding that the vessel was registered at Auckland, sent the result of the enquiry to that port. The local superintendent of Navigation doubts whether he has jurisdiction, but is making enquiries to see whether he can hold an investigation, and save the expense uf officers and crew having to proceed to Auckland. Received April 19, 8.45 p.m. SYDNEY, April 19. The Superintendent of Navigation has now receive a cable from the New Zealand Marine Department, consenting to the enquiry into the loss of the steamer Countess of Ranfurly being held in Sydney.
