PARLIAMENTARY DEBATING SOCIETY.
FORMED IN MASTERTON. A meeting was held last . evening, in the Dominion Hall to consider the advisability of forming a Parliamentary Debating Society in Masterton. There was a very satisfactory attendance and Mr G. R. Sykes occupied the chair. £fter the chairman had explained the object ot the meeting, some discussion followed, and, on the motion of Mr J. R. Cole, seconded by Mr A. Wise, it was unanimously decided to form a society to be called the "Masterton Parliamentary Debating Society." It was agreed to hold weekly meetings, the first to be held on Monday, May 2nd. The subscription for members was fixed at 5s each. Rules to govern the Society were drafted, and it was decided to have these printed and circulated among the members. The following appointments were made;— Speaker, Mr J. T. M. Hornsby; Chairman of Committees, Mr J. C. Cooper; Clerk of the House and Treasurer, Mr W. Gillespie. The personnel of the Government will be elected at the next meeting, most probably on the lines of the proposed Elective Executive Bill. Thirty of the audience present expressed their willingness to become members of the Society, and it is anticipated that sufficient members will be enrolled to every constituency in the Dominion. It is understood that the leading debaters of Masterton are interesting themselves in the matter.
