During the hearing of evidence in a libel action, Karl May, a septuagenarian millionaire philanthropist, an author of pious books, and a prominent personality in German public life, was proved to be identical with a notorious brigand, who has been sentenced to two terms of imprisonment, and who had committed numerous crimes of violence in Southern Saxony, forty years ago. May collapsed when he beard the evidence, arid had to be placed under supervision to prevent him committing'suicide.
