THE MAYORALTY.

MR J. M. CORADINE ASKED TO STAND. Yesterday afternoon a deputation of ratepayers waited upon Mr J. M. Corradine, who occupied the Mayoral cna ir prior to the present Msyor's election, and requested him U consent to be nominated again for the office at the ensuing election. A rev quisition signed by a large number of leading tradespeople was presented to Mr Coradine in support of the deputation's request. Mr Coradine stated that he hfd no' up till then seriously entertained engaging in the Mayoral contest this year, but as a desire had been expressed that he should do so he would consider the matter, and would give the deputation his reply by noon today A From the general tone of Mr Cora- ** dice's reply the deputation were, according to the remarks ot a member of it, inspired to expect an answer in the affirmative. So far no definiteness is attached either to the number or the. personality of the candidate for local Mayoral honours. Even the present Mayor (Mr P. L. Hollimjs) has not yet given an indication as to ■whether or not he intends to recontest the chair. The name of Mr John Hunter, and also of another leading townsman have be?n mentioned as likely caudidates, but when interviewed by an Age reporter both thess eenttemen declined to commit tnemaelves at present.
