"I AM POWELKA."
"NOT ANOTHER WORD OR YOU . ARE A DEAD MAN." At Baldwin's Avenue, the next j street from East street, and also , crossing Ferguson street, the scene of last night's sensations, Mr £. Leybourne, a local commission agent of the firm of Snow and Co.toas riding along the street when he met a man with a revolver in front of Mr Percy Baldwin's residence Leybourne said to him: "Hello, are you scouting, too?" The man replied: "Yes." Leybourne said: "Are ycu Icoking for Powelka?" The man replied: "1 am Powelka—not another word, or you are a dead man," j ressing the revolver to Ljybourns's forehead and presently walking away.
A HUNGRY LOOKING MAN IN - A RESTAURANT. LEAVES WITHOUT PAYING. Another incident to-night was the appearance nf a grey over coated, hungry looking man in . Santos* restaurant in the middle ot the Square about 8 o'clock, who demanded coffee and a flounder. The kitchen man believed he was Powelka, and the opportunity was taken to ring up the police, but toe man very rapidly consumed his food, and left without paying, before the police arrived, THE TOWN IN A FERMENT. AN OLD LADY ACCOSTED. The town is in a fernrent, and parties are being despatched m all directions that offer such clues as those just mentioned. About 6.40 o'clock a man with two revolvers in Church Street (still in same vicinity as East Street and that of the other incidents) accosted an old lady and a child, and pointed his revolvers at them, but let them pass cn.
NARROW ESCAPES. ASHHURST RESIDENTS GREATLY ALARMED. MRS POWELKA. This evening a revolver shot was fired, apparently at some people, who came out to investigate a horse in their shed at the ; corner of Fitzroy and East Streets. The bullet went over their heads. The shooter rushed into the open ground of the next section, and turnirg, fired another shot. The people rushed inside and barred their doors.
At Ashhurst the residents fire in a great state of alarm. Powellca is alleged to have threatened to hlow up P. Hanlon's place. Hanlon is his brother-in-law, and a well-known local resident.
Mrs Powelka is expecting to become a mother, and is terrified.
