NOTES ON THE RACING,
my (''Zetland.") Only four stattel for the Hurdles oi one mile and threequarters. Longner led past the stand, but going out of the straight Audax took up the running. He held command round to the five furlongs post, where Chase Mab joined him. Entering the home turn Longner came through and wun a nice race by threequarters of a length from Whatakura. For the Waiwetu Handicap, of seven furlongs, Bally Shannon was the only withdrawal, leaving six to go to the post. Sharpshooter, the favourite, was first out, and led to the straight. At the distance he was challenged by Truganini, but held his place and won by a neck from the latter, with Bollin a fair third. A nice field of eleven contested the Silversteam Handicap, of seven furlongs. Penza was made a firm favourite, Explosive, Marengo and Succession also being solidly backed. From a good despatch Hilar an was the only one that did not get away on good terms. St. Felix was first to show out in front, and ridden a good race by L. Traill wu i by two lengths from Explosive, Ukraine a neck away third. The favourite, Penza, was never prominent. Idealism and Succession were fourth and fifth respectively. Equitas and Swimming Belt were the only defections from the Thompson Handicap, and thirteen wellconditioned horses faced the starter. After a long delay caused by the vagaries of Adria an even despatch was effected, and Armlet, the hot favourite from the date of acceptances, took up the running, followed by Ballarat and B Tumut in this order. At the home turn the latter headed "Ballarat, and opposite the grandstand North East ulso passed her. Armlet won by three clear lengths, Tumuet finishing in second place a neck in front (<f North East. The race was run in lmin 40 l-ssec, the six furlongs taking lmin 14 2-ssac, and the seven furlongs lmin 27 25sec. Of the six starters in the Challenge Stakes, Penates was made a verystrong favourite. Formby quickly took up the running. He was joined by Penates at the five furlongs post, but drew away at the home turn, and stalling off a challenge by Polymorphous. Won by half a length, with the favourite a length away third. ; The Plunket Nursery proved an easy thing for Tenterhook, whj was tylront from the barrier rise and won by two lengths from Lord Kelvin. Boanerges and Mon Ami being withdrawn from the Railway Handicap left six in the contest. Kilindini led off, but Gipsy Belle quickly took up the running, and led ti the straight entrance. Perle d'Or then came from the back, and at the distance was slightly in front with
Effort and Advantaee rlnsp uo,. In a tine tinisn Khun iv ;>c ferfe d'Or by j a head. In a field of nil c- for the Tinakori Hack EtnbL'm, hy First Battery —Vapour, was made a strong fir3t selection. She was first to show out and won easily by three lengtns, Kina and Explosive filling the plact s. Previous to going out for the Hurdles Longner had not competed in a jumping race. He was kept well back from his field, and thus had a clear run at the obstacles Wnen called upon at the top of the straight he q lick ly responded, and won easily. He was turned out in fine condition by H. Fletcer, who won a hurdle race with Gold Bird at Pahiatua in January last at the first time of asking. Hilarian was leit at the post m the Silversteam Handicap and Sid Reid did not persevere with him, but allowed him to canter behind the field. As expected bv the majority of the racing public Armlet ii;;d an easy victory in the Thompson Handicap. Tumut ran his best race since winning at Palmerston in December last, and North East put up a very resolute finish, getting to within a neck of Tumut. Penates dd not run up to expectations in the Challenge Stakes, stopping when called upon for his final effort. The winner Formby, galloped the seven furlongs out like a racehorse, and Polymorphous put up a fine performance by carrying 9st 41b, and running second. In the Railway Handicap the finish between Effort and Perle d'Or was splendidly fought ru f , victory going to the first named hy a head. The Taranaki owned Emblem wkich won a double at the Auckland Easter meeting, was backtd down to a short price for the Tinakori Handicap. He never left the result in doubt and won very comfortably from Kina and a processional field
