AMERICAN TRADE WITH CANADA.
The American Bureau ot Statistics publishes figures which show that the trade between the United States and Canada for the calendar year 1909, exceeded that of any other year. Imports from the Dominion ] amounted to £17,600,000, and exports to the Dominion were valued at ' £38,000,050. As compared with the figures for the year 1899 the trade between the tsvo couutries hastmre than doubled. Moreover, ten years ago, according to Canadian statistics, quoted by the Bureau of Statistics, 46.08 per cent, of Canada's toial lmj ports came from the United States, while last year 60.4 per cent, were supplied by the United States. The ten largest items imported from Canada in 1909 were lumber, £3,600,000; copper pigs, etc., £800,000; wood puly, nearly £800,000; hides of cattle, £700,000; fur and fur skins, undressed, £300,000; tea, £200,000; copper ore and matter £180,000; distilleJ spirits, £145,000; and horses, £140,000. The ten leading articles exported to the Dominion were—Coal, bituminous and anthracite, £6,200,000; cotton, £1,600 000; fruits and nuts, £1,000,000; boards, i etc., £800,000; bokos, maps, etc., £600,000; agricultural implements, nearly £600,000; motor ?ars, £500.000; and wheat, £500,000. With the exception of ' locomotives, wheat, wheat flour, leather, steel.and rails, and cotton maiufacuires, nearly all iinpoitknt aruclas of export to Canada have increased during the last ten years.
