The latter asked for a guarantee that Mr Roosevelt would not visit the Methodist Church in Rome, which Cardinal Merry Del Val stated was countenancing a most offensive campaign of caluminous detraction against the Pope. 'lhe Secretary refused to give the guarantee. ivir C. W. Fairbanks, Vice-Presi-dent of United States of America, in an address, said that the Roman were the real cause of the Vatican's displeasure.
