THE POPE AND MR ROOSEVELT.
"INCIDENT MERELY A PERSONAL ONE." Received April 5, 10 a m. ROME, April 4. Mr Roosevelt, in answering the Vatican, said he recognised the Pope's rignt to receive whomsoever he liked, and added:—"l in turn must decline any stipulation or condition limiting the freedom of my conduct/' Mr Roosevelt telegraphed to America, expressing a hope that American journalists would treat the incident as a merely personal one, and in nowise affecting the relations of Catholics and Protestants.
ANOTEHR GUARANTEE ASKED FOR AND REFUSED. CARDINAL -MERRY DEL VAI INTERVIEWED. THE REAL CAUSE OF THE TROUBLE. ' Received April 5, 10.15 pm. ROME, April 5. The Vatican authorities are astounded at Mr Roosevelt publishing the correspondence which ihey regarded as diplomatic documents. Mr Roosevelt's secretary, who is a Roman Catholic interviewed Cardinal Merry Del Val, Pontifical Secretary of State. The latter asked for a guarantee that Mr Roosevelt would not visit the Methodist Church in Rome, which Cardinal Merry Del Val stated was countenancing a most offensive campaign of caluminous detraction against the Pope. 'lhe Secretary refused to give the guarantee. ivir C. W. Fairbanks, Vice-Presi-dent of United States of America, in an address, said that the Roman were the real cause of the Vatican's displeasure.
