THE DEPTH OF THE SEA.

Received April 4, 11.40 p.m. BRISBANE, April 4. The German surveying steamer Planet taking soundings off the coast of German New Guinea obtained a depth of 20,700 feet. This sounding is the iourth deepest sounding in the world.

The greatest depth recorded is 5,155 fathoms (30,930 feet) is in the South Pacific Ocean near the Kermadec Islands.
