MILITARY SPORTS.
ARRANGED BY MASTERTOtf MOUNTED RIFLES.
Unfortunately, for the Masterton Mounted Rifles, the weather day was anything but pleasant for a sports gathering, and consequently the attendance at the military sports held on the Showgrounds was limited, although a fair number of ladies were present. The events were in most cases well contested, and the wrestling on horseback, ia sections of fours, created great The ladies' orange competition onhorseback was also a good event, and the winner, Miss Jensen, went over the course mapped out in the quick time of 30£ seconds, and also retailed all the oranges on her platej 'About; three o'clock the Wellington Highland ftifles" marched to the ground, headed by two of their nipers, Lieutenants Henderson and Wilkinson. The pipers rendered several bagpipe selections on the ground. About 518 was taken at the gates, *- and the officials all worked hard to ensure the various events being run off in quick succession. Sergeant-■*■ Major Burr, assisted by Colonel Cam* eron and Captain McKillop ar;d Lieu- . tenant Page, rendered good service - in promoting the eventa. A word of praise is due to the Secretary, Mr E. Burrows, who had all arrangements complete. Following are the results:—
