(Own Correspondent). Thursday. A very pleasing ceremony took l place on the bowling green yesterday afternoon, when Mr G. A. Burgess. President of the Club, in a most felicitous speech, presented Mr E. H. Petherick, who is leaving this distiict fJr Te Kuiti, on behalf of the members of the Club, with a handsome travelling rug and a shaving set, as a token of esteem and in recognition of the services Mr Peth--1 enck had rendered in furthering the I interests of bowling in this town. I The Pahiatua Tennis Club will be represented at the Wanganui 1 Tournameent by Messrs W. E. ana W. J. Collins, and the Misses Hughes. The annual meeting of the MangatainokA Football Club was held last evening. The business was purely of a routine character. Mr M. Vance was re-elected President. An amend ment to raise the annual subscription to 5s was lost on the voices. T. u e local branch of the Farmers' Union is to be congratulated on its enterprise in forming a class fo. wooi-classing. The secretary has received the requirod number of names, the names of several of the leading farmers being among the number. Friday. VALEDICTORY. I The popularity of Mr and Mrs P. iJ. Quirk, of Konini, and the esteem I in which they are held by the residents of that district, was testified to last evening when on? of the largest gatherings aver seen in the Konini Town Hall, assembled to bid larewell to Mr and Mrs Quirke. Mr P.J Quirk, old' resident* will remember, was one of the original settlers of Konini, the late Mr P. , Quirk, and his two sons, Messrs Pat- ! rick and Thomas Quirk, taking up ■ bush land some twenty-five- years ago. ' In a very appropriate speech, Mr A. McFarlane paid a high tribute of praise to Mr Quirk's sterling qualities as a neighbour and settler, and made reference to the many wajs in which Mr Quirk had assisted early I settlers. He handed to Mr Quirk a handsome solid gold watch and also an illuminated address, which he i asked him to accept as a mark of ' the esteem in which he was held in I Konini, and on behalf of the residents wished him future prosperity in his new home at Te Kuiti. To Mrs Quirk, Mr McFarlane presented a 1 silver-mounted oak salad bowl, and a I silver-mounted oak tray, the speaker I also referring to the kind manner in which the recipient had always assisted at social functions in Konini, , and the surrounding districts. Mr R. Smith also endorsed the former speaker's remarks, and cheers to the echo were given for Mr and Mrs Quirk, and also Mrs Quirk, senr. I During the evening songs were well rendered by Misi H. Reeves, I Miss Tuckwell, Miss L. Tulloch and ■ Mr H. Daysh, and dance music was J played by tne Misses Warren, Wal--1 den, Dempsey, Tuckwell and Messrs 1 L. Ogden and H. Manguson, A splendid supper was provided and at- i tended to by a ladies' committee, and Mr Gordon Smith capably acted as M.U. A most successful gathering broke up at midnight. Mr Quirk will be missed in this district, as being a keen r iort he took an active part in the ; . lirs of the local Racing Club and tu~ Woodlands Hunt Club.
