LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Wairarapa Age will not be published on either Good Friday or on Easter Monday. The Masterton Dredging Company, yesterday, declared a dividend of 4s per share. The Masterton Homing; Pigeon Club are sending to Ormondville by this morning's train 42 birds, representing 13 lofts, to be liberated on Friday morning at 8 o'clock. Thexlis- ' ttance for the birds to fiy is 65 miles. The race is for Mr J. L. Murray's trophy. The Sports Committee of the Masterton Mounted Rifles met last evening to make final arrangements for the military sports on Monday next. Surgeon-Captain Cook donated a trophy to count as a points prize for all the events. Arrangements were also made for the holding of a Church Parade on Sunday next. The weekly prayer meeting in connection with Dr. Henry's* mission ■ was held at the Methodist Church last evening, when there was a very good attendance. The Rev. A, Hodge conducted the service, his address taking the form of an appeal to the public for encouraging intercessory prayer.

• Nothing has vet keen done to deal finally with the trcvible which occurred at the recent Dominion Scouts camp at the Hutt. Tiu 'Jourt of In- I quiry has concluded its vw.tk, but the evidence has to be submitted to the Defence Minister and Council of Defdnce for decision. It is understood that the Minister has not yet received the papers. There is every indication of a keen game of cricket being played between the representative teams, Wairarapa v. Marlborough, that is to eventuate on the Park Oval to-morrow afternoon and Saturday next. Both districts are putting a strong team into the field. The Wairarapa team is slightly altered, T. Prow relacing P. Hooper, and L. Boyd filling the vacancy through Waueh being unable to play. The Wairarapa Cricket Association representative team is now as follows :—Messrs Moorhouse, Logan, Smart, Prow MacKellar, Moss, L. Boyd, Sievers, Mascelle, Styles,, Redmond; emergency wicket-keeper, T. Voyce. The members of the above team are requested to be on the ground at one o'clock sharp. This match is timed to start at 2 p.m.

The Kopuaranga Sports Committee have added two extra events to their Easter Monday programme, viz , a high jump handicap, and a lightweight Cumberland wrestling event. Bojth are post entry events. More Masterton competitors have entered this year than in previous years, and it is certain that a large contingent of the Masterton public will be i present at this sports gathering, | which is always very popular.

The Masterton Mounted Rifles have an excellent programme of sports for Easter Monday. There are sixteen interesting events, and nn waits in between. They are novel, humorous and instructive. The convenient grounds of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association will be the scene of the sports. It is quite safe to predict a phenomenal gathering of the public. There will be refreshments nn the ground, and afternoon tea.

A special meeting of the Wairarapa Amateur Swlmmnig Club was > beld on Mondav- night, Mr J. Pryor presiding. It was decided that the annua 1 social snd dance be held on Thursday, April 7th, in the Drill H?U. The prizes that were won dur- . ing the year are to be presented at the social by the Patron of the Club, Mr D.Oaselberg. A special committee was appointed to have the floor in good order. The price of admission is to be the same as usual, and no expense will be Bpared to make the social the moat enjoyable of the season.

Mr D. Donald will leave to-day by, the s.s. Manuka from Wellington direct to Sydney. Mr Donald will probably make a stay of six months • on the other aide, and during that period will endeavour to inspect industries in progress that might with advantage be establised in Masterton. Oo a former visit to New South . Wales Mr Donald secured several works on the principal industries of Sydney. These are now at his Masterton offices, and are at the disposal of anyone interested in the important question of establishing local industries in Masterton. Such a collection of technical books and papers could be made the nucleus of a library for the Masterton Chamber of Commerce, if the committee would take steps to secure possession of books of such value to a commercial community.

Mr W. Abbott, Secretary of the Federated Shearers' Union, who was interviewed yesterday by a Wairarapa Age reporter, in regard to the mysterious drowning fatality of Mr P. F. Darcy, their General Secre- | tary, states that there are no further developments. The clothes were undoubtedly those of Mr Darcy, and those who were in a position to speak with authority had told him that there was not much chance of the body being recovered on account of the phenomenal under current of the water at the locality where the clothes were discovered. It is only last month that Mr Darcy was in Masterton on ralief duty for the local Secretary, and during his sojourn here made numerous friends. He was a powerfully built man, and whilst in Masterton indulged a great deal in the pastime of swimming, his skill in this direction being the subject of much admiration. The • statutory annual meeting of the Masterton Borough. Council was held last evening for the purpose of amending the district electors' roll. There were present, the Mayor, Mr, P.L. Hollings. and Crs W. Morris, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple and R.. Rigg. The Town Clerk submitted the district electors' list, which was certified to be correct. The list contains the names of persons entitled to vote as owners of property, and by reason of having resided in the Borough for the last three months, and paying not less than £lO per year for premises resided in, and who are thereby entitled to exercise voting powers at the forthcoming election of Mayor. The list so certified will come into operatiun on April Ist, and will supersede all previous lists. Crs R. Rigg and F. W. Temple were appointed to sign the T *roll along with the Mayor. The initinery of the Wellington Highland Rifles, who visit Tinui at Easter, to shoot a rifle match with the Tinui troop of the Masterton Mounted Rifles, is. as follower—The Highlanders Will leave Wellington by midnight train on Thursday, ! and leave Masterton for Tinui about 2.30 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday the match will take place. In the evening the Highlanders will give an entertainment in the Tinui Hall 'n aid of the School Funds. On > Sunday there will be a Church Parade, and on Monday they will leave for Masterton after breakfast,, and attend the Masterton Mounted Rifle Sports, returning to Wellington in the evening. The Highlanders will be about twenty strong with three pipers. They will be under the charge of Lieute unit George Willis, Lieuts. Henderson and Wilkinson also making the trip. They will travel in full-dress uniform.
