An official inquiry into the origin of tne late fire at the District High Si'hool is to be held to-morrow at the Schuolf rounds. invite any person who can throw any light on the matter to come forward and g;v.'i vidence. Several members of th.< Education Board will be present.

At the meeting of the School Committee last night Messrs H. Thomas, Ritchie. Wilson and the Chairman were appointed a sub-committee to make temporary arrangements for carrying on the school. STOCK SALES. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having held their usual sale at the Pahiatua Farmers' Yards, where they offered sheep well over advertise numbers, and cattle and pigs up to advertised numbers. The that came forward all showed that they were not the best of the flocks out for all that were offered for sale as credit to their owners. We are pleased to report that good ewes are improving in price, and the demand for same was spirited. Cattle were keenly competed for, and we report a total clearance. We report as follows Two-tooth ewes, small, 9s 2d to 10s 8d; two-ani four-tooth ewes, small and poor condition, 8s 9d to 9s 7d; mixed aged cows, Bs, 8s 2d, 8s 9d to 9s 6d to 10s; backward all aged ewes, 5s 8d to 7s 2d; cull lambs to 2s 7d; mixed store lambs, 4s 6d to 5s 9d; wethers, two and four-tooth, 10s to lis 6d; a good line fetched up to 12s. Cattle: Threeyear steers to £4 8s 6d; fat Cows to £4 14s. We are holding our next sale in the Managhao Yards as

usual. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd.. report on their weekly sale held to-day as follows:—We had a fair yarding of sheep and cattle. There was also a large attendance of farmers and buyers. Prices on the whole compared favourably with late rates, although at times bidding was rather slow, and in favour of buyers, and ran as follows Four-tooth ewes, 10s 9d to lis 3d; four-year ewes, 9s 6d; a.m. ewes, 6s 6d to 7s 6d; lambs, 2s lOd, 5s 3d, 7s 3d; rams, Ign to IJgn. Cattle: Twenty-months steers, £3 4s 6d; cow and calves, £2 8s to ; yearling steers, 20s, 30s to 40s.
