Monday.
The weather prevailing here to-day was taken by residents as an introduction to winter.
An inquest was held to-day at Dr Smyth's private hospital on the body of the little child Edith Emma McAuley, who died on Saturday afternoon as the ,result of injuries sustained through her flannelette nightdress taking fire. The evidence showed that the child wandered up to the range during the short absence from the kitchen of the parents, and when her clothes took fire, her sister Mary endeavouredgto quench the flames with water, but was only partly successful. Her father then came alone, and put her in a pool of water, and dressed Jthe burns with oil, and then brought the little sufferer into the private hospital, a distance of nearly six miles. A verdict was returned that death was due to the accidental catching fire of the nightdress, and no b?ame whatever was attachable to the parents. A rider was added condemning the use of flannelette for clothing or other purposes, and the acting coroner, Mr J. T. M. Hornsbj, J.P., was asked to make strong representations to the Minister for Public Health on the subject. The Kia Toa Lady Minstrels are to give an entertainment at Parkvalt; on Thursday evening.
