MYSTERIOUS EXPLOSION.

FOUR SHOPS WRECKED. Received March 20, 5.50 p.m. MELBOURNE, March 19. Four shops in Brunswick Street Fitrzoy, were destroyed by a mysterious explosion. Eleven persons were residing in the wrecked premises. Crabtree, a grocer, was seriously injured, being buried in the debris; Mrs Sneddon and daughter were severely hurt by the explosion, which as accompanied by a vast sheet of flame. It is supposed that the explosion is attributable to an escape of gas, but the details are meagre.

INCENDIARISM THE CAUSE.

AN ACCOMPLICE CONFESSES

Received March 20, 5 p.m. MELBOURNE, March 20. I n regard to the four shops, almost' demolished by the explosion, a man named Shaw has confessed to the police that recently Crabtree effected an insurance on the stock, and, subsequently, removed about £4OO worth. Shavings were crated in a large quantity. He (Crabtree) on Friday night saturated these with methylated spirits and benzine, and it was arranged that when the place was well alight Shaw should jump from the verandah and give the alarm, but the scheme miscarried When Crabtree struck a light a violent explosion 'followed, and Shaw knew no more.
