CRICKET.
Cricket is practically over for thij season, and its place will be taken by football and hockey. Both senior championships are still in dcubt, in both instances rusting with the result of matches to be finished between Carlton and Carterton. S. Matthew's A team are leading for tie junior championship, with Carterton second and S. Matthew's B third. The following players have been selected by Mr E. Collinge to represent Wairarapa in their match with the Marlborough representative team on the Park Oval on Good Friday afternoon and the following day. Messrs W. Redmond, D. K. Logan, C. J. Mackellar, H. Mnorhouse, P. Hooper, L. Smart, R. Moss, A. Styles, H. Waugh, S. Sievers, and C. Mascelle. Emergencies: L. Boyd and T. Voyce. The above team is not the strongest that could be picked for batting, on account of C. Perry, A. Esson and T. Maunsell not being available., As a bowling team it is exceptionally strong. Members of the team are requested to meet at the Oval on Monday afternoon, and prepare the wicket. A meeting of the Wairarapa Mai> aeement Committee will be held in Messrs Gawith and Logan's office tcnight, at 7.30. Carterton and Carlton play their match on the Park Oval this afternoon, and a very interesting game should result. On Easter Saturday the first annual representative match betwet n the Canterbury and Wellington ladies will take place on Hagley Park, Christchurch. The proposed Otago-Canterbury match at Easter has been abandoned, the Otago Association considering it too big a risk. Bowley, a profesaonal player from Worcestershire County, has offered his services as coach in Dunedin. The ■whole coach question has been referred to a Special Committee. The Dunedin /'Star" learns on the best authority that Armstrong, captain of the Australian eleven, is anxious to settle in New Zealand, provided he can get permanent employment. The leading batsman of South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and New Zealand, in the opnion of the public is a left hander, viz., C. Hill, V. S. Ransford, W. Bardsley, and D. Reese. In every case save Clem Hill, the question is of course, open to question, W. W. Armstrong challenging V. S. Ransford and V. Trumper challenging W. Bardsley. Hjhjg prominence of the left-hander is peculiar:—"Referee."
Armstrong, at the dinner after the first test ( said that New Zealand could take no better steps to improve her play than to rMefc foreign talent. What was also very necessary was that wickets should be improved. The best batsmen in the world could not show all their strokes on the pitchea they had played on in New Zealand.
