NORTH ISLAND BAND CONTEST.
WANGAN.UI WIN THE QUICKSTEP. By Telegraph—Press Association. WANGANUI, March 17. The Band Contest was continued to-day. The weather was gloriously fine, and the Quickstep Competition took place in the presence of a record crowd. The gate takings amounted to £350. Twelve bands competed. The Wanganui Garrison carried off first prize with a total of 258f points, of these 130 were for music. Blenheim was second with 283 points, 122 being for music. Petone came third with 265 points, 120 being for music. The others finished as followsNelson 2611, Wanganui City 253. Manaia 247|, Gisborne 247J, Cambridge 243, Wellington Tramways 233 i, Waitara 232J, Feilding 223J, Opunake 217. This evening the Quartette Competition took place. The results are:—Nelson 132, Wanganui No. 1 129, Wanganui No. 2 121, Gisborne 107. The judge said the winning quartette was the best he had ever heard.
